The MEAs department is responsible for the implementation of the three biodiversity-related MEAs, i.e.

  • The United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity;
  • The Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety
  • The Nagoya Protocol on Access to Genetic Resources and Benefit-sharing

The department is charged with responding to notifications which include requests for information and nominations for attendance at meetings. Apart from this, the department processes applications for biodiversity research, drafts and issues permits. The department is also involved in project management, overseeing GEF funded projects, implementation of the coastal and marine management programme and supports the work of the Darwin Initiative Project.

More specifically the Unit is required:

  1. To coordinate and support programmes, to achieve national obligations to the Convention of Biological Diversity and its protocols
  2. To coordinate and support programmes for development and implementation of the national biodiversity strategy and action plan;
  3. To coordinate and support programmes for the effective regulation of coastal and marine resources;
  4. To support the environmental authorisation process of development activities for the protection and conservation of biodiversity;
  5. To manage the portfolio of the GEF Operational Focal Point;
  6. To manage system(s) for the collection and sharing of biodiversity information;
